The History of Robes for men
The use of gowns and robes for men dates back to the mid-17th Century, when these gowns/robes were worn inside their house and were termed as Indian gowns because of the Eastern influence. The material used for making these items was predominantly cotton and slowly they transitioned into silk and velvet as so on. Dressing robes had the absence of buttons since then; they used to have similar belt mechanism to hold the dress in a covered form. Shape of the robes has mostly evolved with every passing decade, which was mostly altered to suit the purpose. The morning & evening toilette were the primary purpose of wearing the robes and they fulfilled the cause.
Earlier, the dressing gowns were made to keep people warm as these were mainly used in country where temperature is mostly on the lower side, the problem started to arise when the central heating became commonly used by the citizens at their home and the robes became inadequate for warmer temperatures, that forced people to think of alternatives without abandoning the heritage, hence the silk robes which would not only provide the perfect style but also not make them sweat, came into being.
